What Causes Swimmers Hair Causes Prevention

Do you love swimming, but hate how it makes you hair dry, tangled, damaged, and possibly lighter or green? If so, your problem is swimmers hair. Once you understand how swimmers hair works, you may be able to prevent or correct it. Question: What Causes Swimmers Hair? Swimming in a pool is great for your body, but hard on your hair! If you swim a lot and your hair has become dry and damaged, you may have a case of swimmers hair. Heres a look at the causes of swimmers hair and what you can do to prevent or treat it. Answer: Science of Swimmers Hair It may seem strange that exposure to water could make your hair dry and damaged, but it isnt actually the water that causes the problem. Pool chemicals, especially chlorine and bromine, react with the sebum and oils that protect your hair, leaving the hairs cuticle exposed. This allows other chemicals to react with your hair, such as copper compounds, which can give your hair a greenish tint. Your hair also becomes more susceptible to damage from the suns ultraviolet rays. The ultraviolet radiation breaks the bonds in keratin, the protein that makes up hair, causing roughness and split ends. Pigment molecules also succumb to pool chemicals and the sun, so even if your hair doesnt turn green, it can become lighter or faded. Preventing Swimmers Hair The best way to prevent swimmers hair is to keep the pool water from soaking into your hair. A swim cap will work for this. Limiting your hairs exposure also helps. You wont see much damage from the occasional dip in the pool, nor will you get damaged hair if you dont get your hair wet. If you dislike using a swim cap, another strategy is to wet your hair with clean water before entering a pool or the ocean. Hair that is already saturated with water wont absorb more water, so less damage will occur. You can undo some damage and prevent further problems by showering after exiting the pool. Its best if you shampoo your hair, but even a quick rinse in fresh water will help remove the pool chemicals. Follow up with a conditioner to seal your hairs cuticle and replenish its protective coating. Avoid Hair Processing Healthy hair is less susceptible to swimmers hair than hair that already has damage. If you have colored, permed or heat-treated hair, your hair is at greater risk for dryness and color loss from swimming than it would be if you had untreated hair. If you swim a lot, try to minimize hair processing and keep up your cut so that chlorine wont get in through split ends. A Word About Special Shampoos You can purchase a special shampoo made just for swimmers. These products typically contain ingredients that will chelate copper and other metals so that they wont discolor your hair. The shampoo may leave a waxy coating on your hair, which is intended to prevent it from soaking up pool water. You may wish to alternate this shampoo with a clarifying shampoo, to prevent build-up which can weigh your hair down and dull its shine. Another option is to use a regular shampoo and follow up with a leave-in conditioner. A conditioner that contains a UV-filter is a nice choice because it will provide protection from both the sun and the pool. You may also want to save yourself some trouble and use a detangler after swimming. Key Points Swimmers hair is hair that is dry, damaged, and possibly discolored due to exposure to chemicals in a treated pool or the ocean.Copper is the main culprit behind the most damage. Copper compounds are used to prevent the growth of algae, microorganisms, and invertebrates in pool water.Other chemicals that cause damage include bromine, chlorine, and salt (NaCl). Bromine and chlorine (including chlorine from salt) can react with hair, breaking bonds in its protein, keratin. Salt also strips oils from hair, making it dry.Damage may be minimized or prevented by pre-treating with a product for swimmers, dampening hair with clean water before entering the pool or ocean, wearing a swim cap, and immediately rinsing hair upon exiting the water. Some of the damage can be reversed by using conditioner or special products intended to treat swimmers hair.

Despite its continuous aging, the epic poem Beowulf is still currently discussed in modern day English courses, allowing the reader to unfold and discuss certain literary themes associated throughout the epic poem. One arguable theme associated with the Anglo-Saxon styled poem is that if a great warrior can also be a prominent ruler of their land or not. A warrior is usually associated with being victorious in challenging situations, automatically associating themselves as being a great leader or king of a kingdom. However, heroic actions cannot simply determine a great leader, but rather the character’s traits unique to each great warrior which are needed to produce a great leader. Traits such as: god like strength, courage to†¦show more content†¦However Beowulf displayed vital traits needed in a great leader. At his lowest point, Beowulf still gave his all; never accepting defeat. Accepting a taunting task such as this swim requires enough courage as is, but to carry threw and be victorious demands a great respect none can share. This plays into being a great leader when faced with harmful conflict. During times of low moral, many look directly to their leadership to gain motivation. With Beowulf having such great strength and courage second to none, it would allow him to make decisions that would instill confidence and motivation in his men, likely allowing victory to follow. Coinciding with courage and strength, both loyalty and courtesy are two other key elements that lay at the core of being both a great warrior and leader. Beowulf perfectly exemplifies these two traits in his willingness to help Hrothgar and his current need for help. What proves his loyalty doesn’t come straight from his heart, but rather the past and Hrothgar’s history with Beowulf’s father. In order to resolve a gruesome blood feud between the Wulfings and Ecgtheow, Hrothgar paid a sum of money to settle their differences. Hrothgar ex plains, â€Å"This man is their son,/ here to follow up an old friendship† (375-376). Although Beowulf has no obligation to Hrothgar, he understands the sacrifice that was made for his father and is grateful for his past help. Therefore assisting in the slaying of a

The Transgender Rights Of Transgender People examples Essay Within the recent years, the transgender movement has become more apparent than ever. With television shows like â€Å"RuPaul’s Drag Race†, â€Å"Keeping It Up With Cait† and â€Å"I Am Jazz†, the voices of transgender people are more public than ever. Celebrities like Caitlyn Jenner and Laverene Cox are changing the face of the movement by showing people that it is never too late to be their true selves. American laws are acknowledging the rights of transgender people, but not in a positive way. These are just people trying to be their best selves. Transgender people deserve to have all the rights that a non transgender person has. As a person who assigns herself with her assigned gender, I can go to the doctor at anytime with any problem and can get treated very easily. Unfortunately, people that identify as transgender do not have the same rights as I do. A transgender person by definition is: â€Å"someone whose gender identity-that is, an individual’s internal sense of being male or female-does not align with his or her assigned sex† (Barry). Transgender people can get refused to seen by a doctor, just because they are transgender. A study of how transgender have been discriminated by medical providers was done and the study showed: â€Å"Nineteen percent had been refused treatment by a doctor or other provider because of their transgender or gender non-conforming status† (). Broken down by race, the ethnic group that was refused the most was: American Indian (36%), Multi-Racial (27%), Hispanic (22%), Black (19%), White (17%), Asian (15%) and then 19% (Total Sample). Not only can they be refused medical treatment, but doctors and medical professionals can be verbally abusive as well! â€Å"Over one quarter of respondents (28%) reported verbal harassm. .ng up, I was always an activist for LGBTQ people. I was an officer of my high school’s Gay Straight Alliance for two years and was in the club for four. We mainly focused on getting marriage equality and making our school a safe space for everyone. I have always wanted to learn more about transgender rights and through this paper, I truly learned about how little rights they do have and how discriminated against they are. I want to help create safe spaces for everyone wherever I go where people can feel free to be themselves. Most people are familiar with the transgender community with role models like Caitlyn Jenner and Chaz Bono, but don’t know how much they are discriminated against or how little rights they have. The United States should have stronger laws protecting the rights of transgender people, so they can live their lives as free as they should be able to.
